  • Soon after arriving from Hong Kong to study at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1990, Shirley Tse abandoned philosophy for visual art, and relocated to Southern California, receiving an MFA from ArtCenter College of Design in 1996. Almost immediately she embraced plastics as material and metaphor. Of late, she has expanded her palette to glass baubles, wire mesh, figurative CelluClay sculptures, and literary texts; this is all on view in Tse’s latest exhibition, “Lift Me Up So I Can See Better,” which is partly inspired by Oscar Wilde’s sad children’s tale “The Happy Prince.” The exhibition will be on view at Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica from July 9 through September 3, 2016.

BIOGRAPHY

Shirley Tse's sculpture, installation and photography explore the mutability of man-made materials and their relationship to contemporary artistic, cultural and political conditions. Tse's work has been included in numerous museum exhibitions worldwide. Among them are The Biennale of Sydney, Bienal Ceara America, Brazil, Kaohshiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada, Museum of Modern Art, Bologna, Italy, San Francsico Museum of Modern Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, Kettle's Yard, UK, and Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Zealand. Tse is represented by Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has been included in numerous articles, catalogues and publications including Sculpture Today by Phaidon (2007). She received the City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship in 2008, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2009, and the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists in 2012.  Currently the Co-Director of the Program in Art, she has been a member of the faculty at California Institute of the Arts since 2001.  Tse is included in the book, Akademie X, 2015.
