BIOGRAPHY
BADA SONG was born in Je-ju Isalnd, Korea, and raised in Seoul. She is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has expanded from Sculpture into various modes and media, including drawing, photography, installation, film, sound and performance.

Based in London, Song’s work translates and repositions Korean culture, experience and history within a broader dialogue of global, contemporary art.

Song’s works tend to subject apparently cultural enquiries to more formal investigation involving materiality, process and perception. A good example of this approach can be found in her Ta – iL drawing series, based on the traditional roof tiles which are disappearing from Korea’s rapidly modernising architecture. Made with graphite - a material reminiscent of the tiles’ dark ceramic - these drawings disrupt the reassuring familiarity of their traditional forms by bringing into question that which the viewer encounters as their surface, depth and shape. Meanwhile the title of these works refers to the English word ‘tile’ as, adopted and pronounced by Korean tongues.

Bada Song has exhibited widely in the UK since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London (BA, Sculpture) in 2002.  She is the winner of a Jerwood Drawing Prize, 2012.
