BIOGRAPHY

Born 1982 in Dinslaken, Germany, Nicolas Pelzer lives and works in Berlin.

He studied at the University of the Arts in Berlin, and received his diploma with distinction from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2011.

Pelzer's works deal with the physical presence and materiality of an actual space. Considering the growing influence of new media especially in the online world, which changes the values in the real world, his installations attempt to reach existing locations and to intervene in their original architecture. His artistic language can be described as ‘beyond-formal’ because its elements refer to standardized shapes of media such as computer screens and cinema formats or abstract parameters such as exponential functions. The usage of the glass, one of the key materials in his installations, derived from its direct influence on the viewers' perception of the space as well as its physical yet non-visible character. For Pelzer the tension between the space and his artworks is crucial, because it reflects the relation between the reality and its overlapping immaterial and abstract world. Through these observations, Pelzer reveals the current structures for perceiving the material aspect of everyday life.

Pelzer exhibited at various museums and institutions such as the Artsonje Center, Seoul, South Korea (2013), the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten, Marl, Germany (2013), the Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, Germany (2012), the Kunstverein for the Rhinelands and Westphalia, Düsseldorf, Germany (2010), the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany (2008).
