BIOGRAPHY

Guadalajara, Mexico. 1973. Lives and works in Guadalajara.

Francisco Ugarte’s work is based on the grounds of architecture, mainly during the creative process: the proposal is generated from a deep focus in the environment, and it’s a response to it. Using a variety of media including site-specific interventions, video, installation, sculpture and drawing, his work can be understood as a phenomenological exercise in which reality is comprehend through contemplation, perception and the essence of things. 

The artist's comissioned interventions include Untitled (Black Paint and White Tubes) at the gallery of Careyes Beach, Mexico (2014); Suggested Chapter at Casa del Lago, Mexico City (2013); the Polyforum Siqueiros Intervention in Mexico City (2012); the Casa Barragán Intervention in Mexico City (2010); Untitled (Oaxaca) at the Oaxaca Museum of Contemporary Art (MACO) in Oaxaca, Mexico (2009); Shadow Projector at the Agua Azul Public Park, Guadalajara, Mexico (2009); Auto- at the Experimental Museum El Eco, Mexico City (2008), and Translucent in the Clemente Orozco Home-Museum and Workshop, in Guadalajara, Mexico (2007).

His recent solo exhibitions include Ibíd in Curro & Poncho Gallery, in Guadalajara, Mexico (2013); (Un)Intentional in Post Box Gallery, London (2013); Light Studies in Inés Barrenechea Gallery, Madrid (2012); I Wish I Could Paint A Beautiful Landscape in Espacio Marte, Mexico City (2011), among others.

A selection of group exhibitions includes Leviatán  at Raúl Anguiano Museum of Art (MURA) Guadalajara, Mexico (2013); Confusion in the Vault at Júmex Museum, Mexico City (2013); The Autumn Bowl, Greenpoint, New York (2012); Donde el Lenguaje es el Material, Casa del Lago, Mexico City (2012); Flesh and Concrete, Apex Art, Mexico City (2012); Ugly, Dirty and Bad, Espacio M, Mexico City (2012), and Alrededor de algo que nos piensa: Alrededor, San Carlos Cultural Center, Mexico City (2011).
