The Showstopper: Hans Rosenström’s Off Seasons "Hans Rosenström, a Finish-Swedish artist living in London, has created a really special work for Chart this year as one of the Special Art Projects. Off Seasons is a collaborative project between Hans Rosenström and the Danish artist duo Stormglas (Andreas Borregaard and Mikkel Sørensen). The work is a reinterpretation of Stormglas’ sound work Seasons (2013), for which Borregaard and Sørensen commissioned four Nordic composers to each create a contemporary interpretation of one our four seasons. Rosenström has reworked these four compositions into one multi-channel sound installation for the Yellow Courtyard at Charlottenborg, creating a new sensory and spatial experience of the music to the viewer.

BIOGRAPHY

Hans Rosenström was born in Lohja, Finland in 1978. He holds an MFA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Rosenström lives and works in London.

Rosenström works with differnet medias, mainly by appropriating the environment with minor interventions to large scale installations.

In his installations, the spectator often plays the main role. Viewers are usually invited to experience a piece individually or in a small group. Many of his works involve sound to be listened to on headphones, creating a direct and intimate sentiment. By these means, matters of isolation and group cohesion, as well as the self and others, are addressed. While engaging the spectator in a close and private manner, Rosenström allows us to experience a surprise, something we did not expect to meet with: the gaze of the other looking at us turns into seeing ourselves. In these set up situations, the viewer is challenged to look at herself from the outside, as a contemplation of herself.

Selected solo exhibitions include In Good Faith, Galerie Anhava, Helsinki (2013), Pintojen Välissä, Ars Nova & Aboa Vetus Art Museum, Turku (2012), Du utan jag, Moderna Museet/studion, Stockholm (2011).

Selected group exhibitions include Art of Memory, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2013), Novelles Vagues, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013), Reality Bites, Kiasma, Helsinki (2012), So You Say, Westspace, Melbourne (2012), Imagine Being Here Now, 6th Momentum Biennale, Moss (2011), Intersection, 12th Prague Quadrennial, Prague (2011), Street View, Mobiel Art Production, Gothenburg (2010).
