BIOGRAPHY

George Young (B. 1981; lives and works in London).

George Young's paintings transport the viewer back to fragmented visions of the mid 20th century. Their rendering in turpentine saturated oil paint on paper is hazy and unclear. They are often unfinished with key parts of the painting left blank or awkwardly cropped, cut out it seems, from larger paintings. If there is a sense of detachment here, it is because these are not the artist’s memories, nor are they subjects with which he has a close affinity. Young finds his source material from other people's albums, out-dated magazines and ephemera of a bygone times. Worlds fair pavilions, newly built hotels, theme-park woodland chalets have been starting points for Young's paintings, revisited over and again in order to explore the idealism of past generations - a subject that is not always so easily pinned down. Like over saturated paint, these ideals have a tendency to distort and bleed away

Young received an MA from the Royal College of Art, London in 2008. Exhibitions include Momentum, 6th Nordic Biennial of Contemporary Art, Moss (2011); The Shape We’re In, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2011).
