  • This year’s Arnold Bode Prize, awarded by the city of Kassel in Germany, has been given to Hiwa K. The artist, who was born in northern Iraq in 1975, lives and works in Berlin, where he recently had a solo exhibition at KOW. Kassel’s mayor Bertram Hilgen announced the prizewinner after the magistrate chairman of the Arnold Bode Foundation selected the recipient per the recommendation of its board of trustees. The prize will presented at Kasseler Kunstverein on Thursday, November 3, 2016.

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1975, Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, Hiwa K lives and works in Berlin, Germany as a political asylum.

A Visual artist and musician ,Hiwa K creates performances in public spaces that address cultural paradoxes, the figure of the amateur artist, or the dissemination of knowledge. He began his artistic practice as a painter in the eighties, inspired by an informal education with intellectuals, musicians and performers. The major fields of these informal and non-systematic studies were European literature and philosophy, learnt from books translated into Arabic.

Some of his solo exhibitions and projects are: My Father´s Color Periods, Prometeo Gallery; For A Few Socks of Marbles, Laboratorios 987 at MUSAC, León / Spain curated by Leire Vergara (2012); As If It Was Here Long Before, Kunstbuero Vienna, curated by Aneta Szylak (2011); Chicago Boys While We Were Singing They Were Dreaming, Serpentine Gallery, London, curated by Janna Graham (2010); Qatees, Prometeos Gallery, Milan, curated by Denis Isaia (2009); Cooking With Mama, Babel Lounge, Pargamon Museum, Berlin (2008) and Cooking With Mama, United Nations Plaza, Berlin (2007).
