BIOGRAPHY

Dahlia Elsayed, born in 1969, New York, NY, focuses on the relationship between image and text, specifically how language shapes landscape. Her paintings, installations and prints synthesize an internal and external experience of place, connecting the psychological with the topographical. She graduated from Barnard College, and received her MFA from Columbia University.

Visually, her work pulls from conceptual art, comics, cartography and landscapepainting and employs symbols of hard data- text, geologic forms, geographic borders, signs/markers, coastlines, tide schedules - to frame the soft data of the ephemeral, adapting a quantitative schema to the qualitative.

Elsayed's art has been exhibited at galleries and art institutions throughout the UnitedStates and internationally, including the 12th Cairo Biennale, and solo exhibitionsat Aljira Center for Contemporary Art and the Jersey City Museum. Her work is inthe public collections of the The Newark Museum, The Zimmerli Museum, Johnson& Johnson Corporation, New Jersey State Museum, amongst others. Dahlia hasreceived awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Edward Albee Foundation,Visual Studies Workshop, Women’s Studio Workshop, Headlands Center for the Arts, and The NJ State Council on the Arts.
