BIOGRAPHY

Born in Jerusalem, 1978, lives and works in Tel Aviv.

Israel studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, and holds both a B.F.A. and a M.F.A. with honors from this establishment. His sculptures have an air of unreality. They are not abstractions of specific objects but rather outline symbols of a shared memory, evoking a range of associations often related to religious artifact and to symbols of power. Each body of work is accompanied by watercolor drawings. Floating in a Dark background, groups of objects form peculiar relationships between themselves creating a parallel environment.

Israel’s recent exhibitions include Superpartners: Reuven Israel, Shai Azoulay, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv, Israel (2011); Locomotion, 121 Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel (2011); Senses of The Mediterranean, Hangar Bicocca, Milan, Italy (2011); 5 Gallery Artists, Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel (2011); Fatima, Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv, Israel (2010); From Shapes to Forms, Floriano Bodini Museum, Gemonio, Italy (2010); The Ministry of Culture and Sport’s 2009 Awards for Art and Design, Herzliya Museum of contemporary Art, Herzliya, Israel (2010); Il Segreto dello Sguardo, Galleria San Fedele, Milan, Italy (2010).

Israel received "Young Artist Award", The Israeli Ministry of Culture in 2009; "The Legacy Heritage Fund Prize", Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2007; "The Rich Foundation Award" in 2006 and "Ehud Elhananani Memorial Prize", Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem in 2004.
