BIOGRAPHY

Born in Sharjah, UAE, in 1975. Lives and works in Washington DC, USA.

For several years now, Ebtisam Abdulaziz has been making work that investigates unconventional methods of compiling biographies and exploring tangential methods of seeking out and collecting materials related to individuals, their personalities and their stories.

Abdulaziz’s approach functions within the realm of the Gestalt and the recognition that understanding something is greater than perceiving the sum of all of its parts. She seeks to highlight the shortcomings of data - where intricate acts of information gathering are exposed as completely futile - and attempts to understand the human psychology.

In addition, her background in mathematics has encouraged her to be fascinated by systemic ways to produce emotionally or intellectually meaningful forms of expression, such as taking one picture every minute of a generic occurrence for the duration of 35 minutes, as a means to highlight the inherent theatricality in quotidian goings-on and interactions.

Ebtisam Abdulaziz’s exhibitions include Sharjah 10th Biennial, Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah (2011); Sharjah–Art From The Emirates, Denmark National Museum, Copenhagen (2010); Across The Gulf, Arc 09 Biennial of Art, Brisbane (2009); Venice Biennale- UAE Pavilion & Abu Dhabi Platform, Venice, Italy (2009); Hong Kong international Art Fair, China (2009); Albastakiya Art Fair- House 89, Third line Gallery, Dubai (2009), First International Roaming Biennial of Tehran, Tehran (2008); Emirati Group exhibition, Spain-Zaragoza (2008).
