BIOGRAPHY
Paul Carter’s practice investigates aspects of the built
environment and architectural structure through sculptural
assemblage and immersive installation. He exposes a state of
constant contradiction between dereliction and construction,
expansion and contraction, a claustrophobic entropy and a
functional reordering of the world around us. His processes, of
collaging urban detritus and utilitarian construction materials,
veer between a carefully concocted artifice and a seemingly
accidental coagulation of abject matter.
Carter’s work is conceived under the unifying idea that all
buildings function as a kind of hotel of sorts. Whether in
luxurious splendour, mundane practicality or low-rent dereliction,
they are places of exchange in which we may exist both as the
guests and employees, the structure and the furnishing.
Paul Carter has presented solo exhibitions at Exeter
Pheoinix Gallery Exeter (2015), Lubomirov/ Angus-Hughes Gallery
London (2015), Shift, London (2012), LOBE, Berlin (2010),
Standpoint Gallery, London (2009) and Matt’s Gallery, London
(2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Business as Usual”
Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival Pyramid Arts Centre (2015),
"Whitechapel Gallery Open" at Whitechapel Gallery, London (2013),
“Soot from the Funnel” at Lokaal 01, Breda, Holland (2008),
“Parallax” at Fieldgate Gallery, London (2008), “The Breakfast
Club” at HOV, London (2007), “Citadel 1 Front Room Killing Room” at
David Risley Gallery, London (2007), “Videoisme” at Mains
D'Oeuvres, Paris (2007), “Pilot 1. International Art Forum”, London
(2004) and “Covered Flash” at Whitechapel Project Space, London
(2004). He is a recipient of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award
(2008), and was nominated for the Paul Hamlyn award in 2008.
