BIOGRAPHY

Born in Scotland in 1979, Kate Owens lives and works in London. Using a range of media, including installation, photography and print, Owens finds a kind of freedom within the restraints of her materials. Often ephemeral in nature, her minimal works are at once highly specific, triggering unexpected associations, and open-ended enough to prompt personal recollections and alignments. They combine particular materials and precise marks with suggestive titles, such as “Affair at Styles”, borrowed from an Agatha Christie novel. They operate according to the same logic that allows for slightly displaced objects or details to jump into sight, yielding discrete and perhaps imagined clues to an otherwise unnoticeable event. Positioned at odds within the gallery, Owens’ gestures and interventions encourage viewers to bend, crane, squat and squint to examine her works more closely as they flicker in and out of view like distant memories. Alongside her individual practice, Owens also produces work collaboratively with Tommy Grace, with whom she co-founded the artist-run gallery The Embassy in Edinburgh.

Recent solo exhibitions include “Personal Bow” at Dicksmith Gallery, London (2009). Her work has also been shown as part of “Boom” at Hotel, London (2010), “Mousetrap” at Galleria Tiziana Di Caro, Italy (2010), “In Which the Wind is also a Protagonist” at La Générale, France (2010) “Altogether Elsewhere” at Zoo Art Fair, London (2009), “Justin Beal, Lena Daly, Kate Owens” at Jancar Jones Gallery, San Francisco (2009), “Tommy Grace and Kate Owens” at Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh
(2007), “Young Athenians” as part of “Destroy Athens”, the 1st Athens Biennial (2007) and “I can’t live without…” at Showroom Gallery, London.
