BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1981 in Paris, France, Adrien Missika lives and works in Geneva. Missika is an artist and co-curator of the art space Galerie 1m3 in Lausanne, which he co-founded in 2006. Primarily working with photography and video, Missika blurs the markers that distinguish fiction from both authentic document and pure illusion. Fascinated by architecture, landscape and archaeology, Missika constructs his pieces using a range of well-known visual cues culled from historical works, films, comic books and postcards. His staged photographs and videos of romantic landscapes, sci-fi narratives and natural occurrences are either created using imperfect models and stage-sets, or assembled out of the artist’s own travel pictures and found imagery. They point toward an infinite library of similar representations from which the viewer inevitably draws upon to complete the works’ unfinished illusion, thus creating a partial displacement that reveals the nature of our perceptions, expectations and desires. Missika installs his pieces using a variety of display mechanisms that create a further degree of distance between the viewer and the work.

Adrien Missika solo shows include: Tephra, École municipale des beaux-arts / galerie Édouard-Manet, Gennevilliers (2013); Impressions Botanique (working title), Bugada & Cargnel, Paris (forthcoming) (2013); A Walk in the Park, Kunsthaus Glarus (2013). Archipel, La Salle De Bains, Lyon (2012); The Sun Is Late, Galerie Crone, Berlin (2012).  Geological Norms (sometimes repeated), Marz, Lisbon (2011); Tropical Prospects, SpazioA Gallery, Pistoia (2011).
