BIOGRAPHY

Based in London and Berlin, artists Nina Beier (b. 1975 in Denmark) and Marie Lund (b. 1976 in Denmark) have been producing work collaboratively since 2004 while also pursuing their own individual practices. Beier and Lund use a range of media including photography, video, performance and sculpture. Their practice examines the aspirations towards new forms of collectivity, exploring those shared actions, ideals, experiences and histories that bind people together in close relationships, temporary groups or abstract communities. Their work often takes the form of simple instructions, at once precise and open to interpretation, that aim to subtly shift – over time through an accumulation, or as a result of a seemingly spontaneous event – the ways in which viewers intuitively engage with a specific context. By staging actions and introducing shifts in existing settings and materials, Beier and Lund urge spectators to reflect upon given viewing conditions, normative behaviors and institutional structures.

Recent duo exhibitions include “The Testimony, Les Sabots, The Making of Difference, The Complete Works” at Nomas Foundation, Rome (2009), “The Object Lessons” at De Vleeshal, Middleburg (2009), “Permanent Collection” at Croy Nielsen, Berlin (2009), “Loss and Cause” at Proyectos Monclova, Mexico (2009) and “All the Best” at David Roberts Art Foundation, London (2008). Their work has also been shown as part of “Audio, Video, Disco” at Kunsthalle Zurich (2009), the Momentum Nordic Biennial, Moss (2009), U-TURN, Quadrennial for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen (2008), “Nought to Sixty” at ICA, London (2008), “Laughing in a Foreign Language” at Hayward Gallery, London (2008) and “Actions & Interruptions” at Tate Modern, London (2007).

Nina Beier and Marie Lund are represented by Croy Nielsen, Berlin, Laura Bartlett Gallery, London and Proyectos Monclova, Mexico.
