BIOGRAPHY

Lone Haugaard Madsen (b. 1974 Silkeborg, Denmark) studied at Det Jyske Kunstakademi Aarhus, Denmark and The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Selected exhibitions include Kerstin Engholm Galerie and the Wiener Secession at Vienna, Art Cologne at Cologne, Chelsea Space at London, Eastlink Gallery at Shanghai, and Biennial for Young Artists from Baltic Countries at Hamburg. She is represented by Galerie Christian Nagel, Cologne. She lives and works in Copenhagen and Vienna.

In her work she addresses questions that regard which context constitutes an artwork and what exactly makes up an institution. She also attempts to discover the relationship that exists for example between an exhibition catalogue and the exhibition, the institutional space, the intentions of the artist, and the public’s expectations. For example, her piece “Space #32 – Workingshoes” is a sculpture of working shoes in a plaster cube. This piece forces the viewer to question to choice of the materials and their use. The workingshoes seem to serve no purpose when they are placed within dried plaster.
