BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1978 in Vila dum Santo, Cota, Portugal, Davide Balula lives and works in Paris. Balula is an artist and a musician. His debut album “Pellicule” combines folk ballads, indie rock and manipulated sounds. Informed by his electro-acoustic training, Balula's visual practice investigates chance encounters, random patterns and the passage of time. Working with various media including sound, installation and drawing, he explores the nature of events and correlations. Balula's installations often take the form of recording devices, unusual measuring tools and scientific experimentations. His piece “Heartbeat Exciter” (2006) tests the influence of a heartbeat pulse on the growth of nettle plants, known for their beneficial cardiac properties, while his installation “Concrete Step, Memory Recorder” (2005-2007) documents the sonic landscape of various exhibitions within a suitcase, doubling as a portable black box.

Recent solo exhibitions include “American Wall Nut” at Fake Estate Gallery, New York (2009), “The Doors behind the darts” at Envoy Gallery, New York (2009), “Le Lac, le mensonge” at Confort Moderne, Poitiers (2008), “De la place pour le sable” at galerie frank elbaz, Paris (2007), ”Tonspur 22” at Museums Quartier Wien, Vienna (2009) and “Austria Sirène du Mississipi” at Musée de l’Objet, Blois & Ecole des Beaux Arts de Chateauroux & Bourges (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “Return to Function” at MMoCA, Madison (2009), “The Possibility of an Island” at MOCA, Miami (2008), ”Balula & Contador meet Coffin Green House” at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2007), “360, Transparent” at ARC/MAMVP, Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, Paris and CCC, Centre de Création Contemporaine, Tours (2007) as well as “This Is Not For You”, Sculptural Discourses at Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna (2006).
