BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1978 in Pessac, France, Benoît Maire lives and works in Paris. While Maire’s work takes various forms including videos, performances, texts and sculptures, his underlying medium is theory. Informed by extensive studies in art and philosophy, his practice engages with the notions of perception and reception. Relying on affect in order to circumvent formalization, his enigmatic works might be described as constellations of signs and references that point towards a possible goal but with no resolution in sight. Writing is an important part of Maire’s practice. In a self-published interview with Falke Pisano, Maire described his theoretical writings as possessing an aesthetic on account of their incompleteness. His practice also engages in the act of reading; Maire has realized a number of pieces that constitute visual interpretations of theoretical texts, including published works by Arthur C Danto and Alain Badiou.

Benoit Maire has forthcoming solo shows at Frac Aquitaine, Bordeaux (2010) and De Vleeshal, Middelberg (2010). He has recently presented solo exhibitions at Croy Nielsen, Berlin (2009), Graz Kunstverein (with Falke Pisano), Graz (2009), Galerie Cortex Athletico, Bordeaux (2008) and Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2008). His work has also been shown as part of “For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there” at Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA, Sept 2009 – traveling exhibition (ICA, London in Dec., MOCAD Detroit in Jan. 2010, De Appel, Amsterdam in Feb 2010, Culturgest, Lisbon in May 2010), “Un Nouveau Festival” at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2009), “Paper Exhibition” at Artists Space, New York (2009), “Object, the undeniable success of operations” at Stedelijk museum bureau, Amsterdam (2008), “Les Feuilles” at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2008), “The artist is a mysterious entertainer” at De Appel, Amsterdam (2008), the 9th Lyon Biennale (2007) and “Proposition de Colloque” at Kadist Fondation, Paris (2007).
