  • The great thing about the Fringe is that you never know what to expect and you can stumble across some gems without expecting to. Hence I was sitting in a smallish theatre with a monkey explaining the theory of evolution to me, the monkey being on the arm of Nina Conti, surrounded with a small but good-natured audience. Slightly less bizarre than the afternoon when six of us sat through a one man show of “My Life as Art,” a performance in which Jez Fielders memorably portrays his life in art...

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1956 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Susan Collis lives and works in London. Primarily a sculptor, Collis uses a range of media including drawing and performance. Her practice explores the relationship between labour, identity and value. She employs painstaking trompe-l’oeil techniques and valuable materials, including ebony, gemstones and precious metals, to simulate modest everyday objects and work tools. Her sculpture “Trojan Horse” (2007), for instance, first appears as a worn, paint-spattered table, when in fact its nicks and stains are deliberate jewel-incrusted marks. Collis’ works undermine the immediacy and desirability of luxury items and good design through their discrete labour-intensive craftsmanship. They are often presented within deceptive installations that further the illusion of their generic character. Framed as the leftovers of some previous exhibition carelessly left behind by absent workers, they formulate a subtle comment on the ways in which we might view and evaluate commonplace goods as well as artworks.

Susan Collis has recently presented solo exhibitions at Ikon, Birmingham (2010), the Torrance Art Museum, California (2010), Galerie Frank Elbaz, Paris (2010), Seventeen, London (2010) and Espacio Minimo, Madrid (2009). Her work has also been shown as part of “Les compétences invisibles” at Maison Populaire de Montreuil, Montreuil (2010), “The Sculpture Show” at Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2009), “Apparently Invisible” at The Drawing Center, New York (2009), “At Your Service” at The David Roberts Foundation, London (2009), “Out of the Ordinary” at The V&A, London and touring (2007-2008) and “An Archaeology” at Project Space 176, The Zabludowicz Collection, London (2007).

Susan Collis is represented by Seventeen Gallery, London and Galerie Frank Elbaz, Paris.
