BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1979 in Bütschwil, Switzerland, Kilian Rüthemann lives and works in Basel. Rüthemann uses a variety of media, including sculpture, installation and video. Informed by Minimalism, Process Art and Land Art, his practice investigates the discrepancies between the built and un-built environment. Often site-specific and temporary in nature, his pieces intervene directly within the exhibition space. Built out of construction supplies, his installations are often the result of an action, which draws attention to the materials’ physical character and functional value, while also mining the site of display. As part of the 5th Berlin Biennial’s sculpture park, Rüthemann created “Stripping” (2008), a work consisting of 340 hand-dug semi-spherical holes that stretched across a 500 square-meter surface of land.

Recent solo exhibitions include "Walking Distance" at Künstlerhaus Bremen (2010), «Attacca – Manor Art Award Basel» at Museum of Contemporary Art, Basel (2010), "Double Rich" at ISR Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Rome (2009), “Sooner Rather Than Later“ at Kunsthaus Glarus, 2009, “Echo” at Loge – Stadtgalerie Bern (2008), “Masse Critique” with Niklaus Wenger at Centre d’Art Neuchâtel (2008) and ”Aussenportal” at Binz39 Foundation, Zurich (2008). His work has also been shown as part of “«Heimspiel – Ostschweizer Kunstschafen» at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen (2009), “Extra Infra Ordinary” at Galerie Schleicher+Lange, Paris (2009), the 5th Berlin Biennial for contemporary Art (2008), “Topfloor” at Platform Garanti, Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul (2007), “Poor Thing” at Kunsthalle Basel (2007) and “Heimspiel – Ostschweizer Kunstschaffen” at Kunsthalle St.Gallen (2003). He has received the Manor Art Award Basel (2009), the Swiss Exhibition Award (2009), the Swiss Art Award (2009) and the Award Kiefer Hablitzel Foundation, Bern (2008).
