BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1980 in Aberdeen, Scotland, Ruth Ewan lives and works in London. Ewan uses a range of media including performance and installation. Her practice investigates the ways in which radical ideologies, forms of propaganda and political protests are transferred, absorbed or lost within popular culture. Her projects often involve collaborating with groups or individuals; in the past, Ewan has worked with buskers, school children and political activists to realize her projects. Several of Ewan’s recent works have engaged with music. Her on-going project “A Jukebox of People Trying to Change the World†consists of a CD jukebox containing over 1200 politically motivated or idealistic left-wing songs. Her week long project Did you kiss the foot that kicked you? (2007) involved the coordination of over 100 street musicians around London who incorporated Ewan MacColl’s song ‘The Ballad of Accounting’ into their usual repertoires.

Ruth Ewan has recently presented solo exhibitions and projects at Gallería Kiosko, Santa Cruz (2009), Ancient & Modern, London (2009), as part of “Nought to Sixty†at ICA, London (2007) and the Artangel Jerwood Open commission, London (2007), as well as at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland (2007) and Studio Voltaire, London (2006). Her work has also been shown as part of “Insiders - pratiques, usages, savoir-faire†at CAPC - Musée d'art contemporain, Bordeaux (2009), “Altermodernâ€, the 4th Tate Triennial at Tate Britain (2009), “Younger than Jesus†at The New Museum, New York (2009), "Come in, friends, the house is yours" at Kuenstlerhaus Stuttgart (2009) and “Niemand bedarf der Bed¸rftigen†at Galerie Sandra Buergel, Berlin (2008). She has been awarded the East international Prize at Norwich Gallery, Norwich (2006).
