  • Long after the ASU Art Museum’s groundbreaking “New American City: Artists Look Forward” show came down in 2007, there was a vestige of painter Carrie Marill in the building, just above one of the baseboards in the women’s room — a bright little fragment of a Phoenix landscape, unobtrusive but impossible not to look at once you knew it was there. It was one of several that Marill had placed around the museum in relatively discreet locations for the group show, which brought together 23 artists who lived and worked in Maricopa County at the time.

  • Walking into the Carrie Marill exhibit at Lisa Sette Gallery in downtown Phoenix is nothing short of a visual delight. Vibrant pin-stripped colors zigzag across Marill’s canvases, which are largely composed of hard geometric forms painted over raw linen. BIOGRAPHY

Elise Ferguson was born in 1964 in Richmond, Virginia and she currently lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1995 and a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988. She attended residencies at the University of Nevada, Illinois State University, and Socrates Sculpture Park.

Ferguson is a painter, photographer, and sculptor; her works are largely grounded in mathematics and geometry. Whether she has folded large sheets of paper into architectural structures like high-stakes origami, or she has sculpted cement onto a canvas, her deft precision neutralizes overly conceptual narratives. The work is only semi-abstract as it is part sculpture-part painting as well as half simple-half puzzling. Ferguson is not utilizing such opposing dynamisms to construct a commentary on societal or theoretical tensions; she is quite simply collecting odds and ends and sometimes garbage from the streets of New York and composing it like poetry. What the audience witnesses at first glace is attractive, but give it an honest second read and slowly the bedraggled character of the select materials subtly reaches into view. Ferguson’s work showcases her artistic tact, providing a lesson in clemency through the process by which she makes the rough, unwanted, and complicated, approachable and refined.

Grant, Chicago Office of Fine Arts, and the SIU-Carbondale University Museum Merit Award.

She is currently represented by the Halsey McKay Gallery and the Romer Young Gallery.
