BIOGRAPHY

Oswaldo Ruiz (b. 1977, Monterrey, México) was trained initially as an architect, he demonstrates in his photographic work and videos a meticulous interest in space and atmospheric constructions that makes him appear to be an architect who constructs with light and shadow, aiming to constantly resignify the narrativity present in images and space.

He studied contemporary art and psychoanalysis at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (from 2000 to 2001), that encouraged his deep interest to investigate in his work the relationship between psychoanalytic epistemology and art. In 2007 he received a Master degree on Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, in London.

For his work he has received several distinctions as the Prize Petrobras-Buenos Aires Photo (2006), and three mayor grants from FONCA and FONECA in Mexico, the last one awarded to do a project about space and history, in Santiago de Chile, in January 2010. For this summer, he’s been selected as a guest artist at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, in Dublin.

He has shown his work individually in Monterrey, and New York. His selected exhibitions include: “Record 02: A Second Glance”, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey (2009). “XIII Photography Biennial”, Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City (2009). “1st Biennial of Young Artists”, Museum of Modern Ar, Moscow, Russia (2008), “Projecto Colector”, Museu D. Diogo de Sousa, in Braga, Portugal (2008). “Twilight Suite”, Louise T. Blouin Foundation, London (2008). “100 Contemporary Photographers of Mexico”, Fototeca Nacional (2008). “Nuevos Leones”, Forum Monterrey (2007).

Oswaldo Ruiz is represented by Luis Adelantado Gallery, in México City and Valencia, Spain.
