  • It’s reported that 80% of the visitors to Frieze—that usually caps 68,000—are there to observe, not to buy. In fact, it may be that Frieze Week is less about selling art than ever. BIOGRAPHY

Singapore-born, Berlin-based artist Ming Wong builds layers of cinematic language, social structure, identity and introspection through his own re-telling of world cinema. He deliberately ‘mis-casts’ himself and others in re- interpretations of classic film scenes, often playing all the roles himself, in languages he doesn’t speak or understand.

He represented Singapore at the 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009, gaining critical acclaim for his presentation ‘Life of Imitation’, which won a Special Mention. Other awards include the Wollita Kulturpreis, Berlin, Germany (2008); One year residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany (2007-08); The Fire Station Residency and Bursary, awarded by ACME Studios, UK (2005); Pearson Creative Research Fellowship, at the British Library, UK (2003-05); London Artists Film & Video Award from Film London, UK (2002/03); and ACAVA First Base Studio Award, UK (2000).

Recent exhibitions include Liverpool Biennial Liverpool, UK; Kann es Liebe sein? Grimmuseum, Berlin, Germany; Ming Wong: Making ,TIFF – Toronto International Film Festival, Toronto, Canada;  Performa 11, New York 2011; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo 2011; Hara Museum, Tokyo, 2011; Villa Romana, Florence 2011; House of World Cultures, Berlin 2011; Frye Art Museum, Seattle 2011; Singapore Biennale 2011; Sydney Biennale 2010; Gwangju Biennale 2010; Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin 2011; Toronto International Film Festival 2010; Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver 2009; etc.
