BIOGRAPHY

Kosta Tonev (b. 1980 Plovdiv, Bulgaria) received an MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and a BA from the National Academy of Art in Sofia.

Tonev's artistic practice employs the element of subjecthood as a material or medium, rather than a theme. Establishing references to mail art, cinema, book illustration, collections, language and text his work combines his interest in conceptual art with a degree of realism and craftsmanship.

His recent solo exhibitions include “The Heavenly Bodies, Once Thrown Into a Certain Definite Motion, Always Repeat” at GEMAK in The Hague. Amongst others, he has participated in the “5th Biennial of Young Artists” in Bucharest, “Contemporary Icons” at the Webster University in St. Louis, USA, Me & I. Self-portraits from the Collection” at Museum der Moderne Salzburg in Salzburg, “Why Duchamp?” at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Sofia, ArteCittà“ at Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy, “All I Can Do Is Art” at the Czech Center in Prague, the Czech Republic.
