Just before the winter holidays, Amir H. Fallah spoke with us from his Los Angeles studio. He had recently become a father and was fresh from finding out that he had won the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for painters and sculptors. Last year was a busy one for the painter, with solo shows at the Nerman Museum of Art in Overland Park, Kansas; the 18th Street Art Center in Los Angeles; and Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles.

The somewhat remote waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn is known largely for its rich maritime history, and also as the home to artist Dustin Yellin’s innovative complex, Pioneer Works. The former home of Pioneer Iron Works, a leading machine manufacturer back in 1866, the cavernous warehouse has been transformed into a creative incubator where art, science and education converge to educate and inspire all who enter. Founded by Yellin in 2011, Pioneer Works has quickly become a center for innovation, for both the quiet community of Red Hook, but also attracting and inspiring members of the close-knit New York art world.

Amir H. Fallah is an artist living and working in Los Angeles, CA. Amir received his B.F.A. from The Maryland Institute College of Art and his M.F.A from UCLA in 2005. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Exhibits include shows at Weatherspoon Art Museum, The Sharjah Biennial 2009, LA Louver, The Third Line, Gallery Wendi Norris, Baer Ridgway Exhibitions, Cherry And Martin, 31 Grand, Frederieke Taylor gallery, Mary Goldman Gallery among others.
He has been a visiting lecturer at a range of respected institutions, including Columbia College, USC, UCLA, Cleveland Institute of Art, California State University, University Of New Mexico, Otis College Of Art, and Maryland Institute College of Art.
Fallah approaches his current paintings as an investigative, analytical historian, though a knowingly imprecise one. He is interested in truthfulness and limitations, and his current body of work grapple with those issues in a way that almost seems backwards: by taking the mistakenly truthful photograph and converting it back into the always suspect, uncontestably subjective medium of painting.
His most notable awards are; Joan Mitchell Foundation 2015 Painters & Sculptors Grant, Jacob Javits Fellowship (2002–2005), Maryland Institute, College of Art Barry Holniker Merit Scholarship (2001) and Ovissi Gallery & Evolving Perceptions Iranian Artist Scholarship (2001).
