BIOGRAPHY

Born in Northern Ireland in 1961, Jon Campbell lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. Characterized by appropriation, collage and DIY painting, Campbell’s practice has evolved a heartfelt pop iconography that combines rock’n’roll references, everyday sayings and autobiographical motifs. Layering enamel house paint on commonplace surfaces, from masonite and plywood to found record sleeves, Campbell creates direct text pieces and simple graphic imagery, such as representations of his parent’s suburban backyard. He often displays his works casually within gallery settings, propping them up on old paint cans to recall their fabrication. The artist’s work “yeah flag” (2005) inspired a small grassroots movement, when locals petitioned the Australian government to replace its national emblem with Campbell’s green flag baring the positive word YEAH in bubbly pink letters.

Recent solo exhibitions include “DUNNO’ at Kalimanrawlins, Melbourne (2012), “Pure Bewdy” at Darren Knight Gallery, Sydney (2011), Melbourne Art Foundation Commission, Melbourne Artfair, (2010), Folk Songs, Uplands Gallery, Melbourne, (2011) and the monograph, Jon Campbell, ‘Book’ published by the artist and Uplands Gallery (2010).

His work has also been shown as part of ‘Black Box / White Cube’, George Adams Gallery, Victorian Arts Centre, (2011), ‘Tarrawarra Contemporary’ TWMA, (2010), Making it New’, MCA, Sydney, (2009), ‘Terra Nullius’, ACC Galerie, Weimar, Germany, (2009)“DE OVERKANT / DOWN-UNDER” at The Hague Sculpture, The Netherlands (2007), “Big in Japan” at Gallery Side 2, Tokyo (2006),
