BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1976 in Munich, Germany, Leopold Kessler lives and works in Vienna. Kessler uses a range of media, including video, photography, performance and sculpture. His work often takes the form of minimal interventions within the public sphere, or surveillance footage documenting imperceptible borderlines, unusual practices and leisurely activities. Investigating the formal and the informal norms that regulate social behavior, Kessler’s practice draws attention to certain processes of exchange and instances of class divisions, which might not be visible, despite their public character, due to their common and normalized occurrence. There is an element of slapstick humor to many of Kessler’s works, which always depart from an existing set of conditions, whether extending a particular object’s function or serving as a corrective measure for an urban problem.

Leopold Kessler has recently presented solo exhibitions at Galerie Andreas Huber, Vienna (2010), Kunsthaus Baselland, Muttenz/Basel (2010), Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid (2009), Bunkier Sztuki, Krakow (2009), Malmö Konsthall, Malmö (2008), Motorenhalle, Projektzentrum fuer zeitgenoessische Kunst, Dresden (2008) and Secession, Vienna (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “The Spectacle of the Everyday”, the 10th Lyon Biennial (2009), “Hors Pistes” at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2009), “Between The Desert And The Sea”, Sharjah Biennial 8 (2007), “Five Billion Years” at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2006) and “VV2” as part of the 50th Venice Biennale (2003).
