BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1975 in Dundee, Scotland, Scott Myles lives and works in Glasgow. Myles uses a range of media, including photography, sculpture, print and installation, often incorporating text and faux finishes into his pieces. His practice deals with the hermetic language and self-referential quality of contemporary art through an idiosyncratic body of work that plays with substance, surface and appearance. Myles’ pieces posses an unusual opacity, simultaneously calling forth a world of references, and narrowing down the possibilities for contingent meaning. He often stages his discrete objects within closed systems of display, using devices including elaborately descriptive titles, and mirrors to cover the gallery windows. His work “On Display and Disguise” (2006) is a tent-shaped wall piece protruding horizontally from the wall. It is covered in a black and white marbling pattern, the substance of which (wood, paint, ink) is obscured by its appearance.

Scott Myles has recently presented solo exhibitions at 'Excess Energy', David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles (2013); 'This Production', DCA, Dundee; 'YOU', Meyer Riegger, Berlin (2012); 'LIRA HOTEL presents Scott Myles', Sonia Rosso, Turin (2011); Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow (2010), The Breeder, Athens (2010), Projects in Art and Theory, Cologne (2009), Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe (2008), The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2007) and Galleria Sonia Rosso, Turin (2006). His work has also been shown as part of “Richard Prince and the revolution” (curated by Jonathan Monk) at ProjecteSD, Barcelona (2009), “Sculpture Show” at Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2009), “Reinvented: Study and Play” at Galerie Jan Wentrup, Berlin (2008), “The Object is the Mirror (Part II)” at Wilkinson Gallery, London (2008), “Hot Rock” at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2007) and the 3rd Tate Triennial at Tate Britain, London (2006).

Scott Myles is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow, Meyer Riegger, Berlin, Galleria Sonia Rosso, Turin, The Breeder, Athens; and David Kordansky, Los Angeles
