  • When I walked into Writ & Vision on a Tuesday afternoon, Lane Twitchell, the artist featured in "Inversion," the gallery-bookshop’s latest exhibition, was enthralled in a conversation with shop owner Brad Kramer about William Law, Joseph Smith and the early unsung conflicts, prophesies and tensions of the founding of Mormonism.

BIOGRAPHY

Lane Twitchell, a Brooklyn-based artist, takes a highly distinctive approach to the issues of nature and culture, of architecture and space. His work explores nature using an idiosyncratic vocabulary of images and forms within historical and contemporary architectural spaces and elements found in the urban environment. Architectural ornaments, pediments, and cornices, often citing specific locations, are combined with motifs as disparate as flying birds, leering monkey faces, and cartoon-book plants and flowers [...]. The work uses architectural forms as the structural frame for dozens of interlocking and juxtaposed motifs that fill the visual space and give it a nervous energy. The intricate cut patterns and motifs reveal themselves only after careful examination, the symmetry drawing the viewer's eye toward the center.

Lane Twitchell received a BFA from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, and an MFA from the School of the Visual Arts in New York. Selected exhibitions include the Greenburg Van Doren Gallery and Whitebox in New York, Cocoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and G-Module in Paris. Lane Twitchell lives and works in Brooklyn.
