BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1975 in Lima, Peru, Armando Andrade Tudela lives and works in Berlin and St. Etienne. Through his installations, paper works and photographs, Tudela reconfigures the signs and figures that make up the modernist lexicon, transforming its seemingly static referents into free-floating codes. By shifting these unstable ‘units of information’, Tudela encourages viewers to re-examine their local history in light of the paradoxical capitalist imperative to conform to a rapidly changing global culture while re-affirming one's distinct national identity. His practice focuses particularly on the ways in which modern and contemporary culture has been integrated into his native Peruvian culture. The constant translation and displacement of recognizable motifs in Tudela’s work becomes a means to subvert dominant readings by keeping information in a constant state of flux.

Armando Andrade Tudela has recently presented solo exhibitions at Carl Freedman Gallery, London (2010), Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona (2010), FRAC Bourgogne (2010), DAAD, Berlin (2009) and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Le Dernier Roman Du Monde” at Supportico Lopez, Berlin (2010), “Brave New Worlds” at The Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis (2007 and Touring), the 9th Lyon Biennial (2007), the 6th Shanghai Biennial (2006), the 27th Sao Paulo Biennial (2006) and the T1, Torino Trienniale, Turin (2005). Tudela is the founding member of the artist run space and art collective “Espacio La Culpable” in Lima, Peru.

Armando Andrade Tudela is represented by Carl Freedman Gallery, London.
