Michael Hakimi's arrangement of forms slowly exposes their situated relationship to context and to politics. He works within the terms of the pictorial to extend the potential of the image, exploring the interdependency and the ambivalence of the picture being both a sign and an object at the same time. In turn, Hakimi's works operate as semiotic studies, relating equally to the problems of representation as to the politics of image construction.
Shifting between vernacular and high-brow cultural referents, phenomenological encounter and conceptual interpretation, the installations of Hakimi are informed by re-enacting tactile maneuvers and spatial strategies performed in the world, only to effect short-circuits back to art's reflective frame; acknowledging that one's environment can only ever be experienced by identfication, determined by omissions as much as what there is to be seen.
