BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1974 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Jesper Just lives and works in New York. Just’s films explore and dismember the social stereotypes associated with masculinity, which still connote violence and emotional stoicism. Relying on the visual lexicon of mainstream cinema, Just casts a series of anti-heroes as his leading men, highlighting the complexity of male relationships, from paternal links to homoeroticism. In his piece “Bliss & Heaven” (2004), a strapping youth follows a mature truck driver into the back of his lorry, which is staged as a Rococo theatre, and is bemused to find the old man performing a cabaret love song. Just’s questioning of gender identity is at times delicate and grotesque, humorous and tragic, but always remains deeply unsettling

Jesper Just has recently presented solo exhibitions at MOCAD, Detroit (2009), Centro de Arte Moderna, Lisbon (2009), Tromsø Gallery of Contemporary Art, Norway (2009), Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris (2008), U-turn / Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen (2008), the Brooklyn Art Museum, New York (2008) and Victoria Miro Gallery, London (2008). His work has also been shown in numerous museums and international exhibitions, including “Romantic Delusions”, the Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool (2008), “CRACK THE SKY”, la Biennale de Montréal, Montreal (2007), KölnShow 2, European Kunsthalle, Cologne (2007), “I'M ONLY HUMAN, Contemporary Video Art”, The Contemporary Art Centre of Thessaloniki, Greece (2007) and the Busan Biennale, Busan, Korea (2006).

Jesper Just is represented by Christina Wilson, Copenhagen, Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris  and Perry Rubenstein, New York.
