BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1972 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Andrew Mania lives and works in London. Mania’s pencil drawings of handsome youths are reminiscent of both Caravaggio’s early works and psychedelic imagery. His subjects appear as icons of some fictive era, suffused with dandyism and hedonism. His works possess an uncanny darkness, an unsettling gloom that filter through their flippant references to art history. Adorned with found frames, they acquire an object-like quality ripe with nostalgia. Recently, Mania has also created a series of sculptures using found objects. These works are reminiscent of surrealist assemblages, poetically defying our sense of the ordinary with provocative humor.

Andrew Mania has recently presented solo exhibitionsAndrew Mania: Recent Portraits,  Valentin, Paris (2016); Andrew Mania: Portraits, BAD Brera Arte e Design, Galerie Francesco Pantaleone, Milan, Italy (2012); at Light & Sie, Dellas (2009), BloomsbergSPACE, London (2009), Galerie Chez Valentin, Paris (2009), Galerie Diana Stigter, Amsterdam (2008), Francesco Pantaleone arte Contemporanea, Palermo (2008) and the Holburne Museum of Art, Bath (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “The Painting Room” at Transition Gallery, London (2008), “The Golden Record” at Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2008), “Odiseado Tra Tempo” at Peter Kilchmann Gallery, Zurich (2005), “Gods and Monsters” at Peres Projects, Los Angeles (2005) and “Inside Outside” at Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes (2004).
