BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1967 in Leatherhead, Surrey, United Kingdom, Simon Patterson lives and works in London. Patterson uses a wide range of media including painting, wall drawing, installation, sound, sculpture and film. His practice is characterized by an epistemological research into the ways in which we name, categorize and identify the world, while exploring the threatening potential of irrationality. His work often involves manipulating systems of classifications, linking different categories through analogy to create new and humorous arrangements. His incongruous associations undermine accepted positions and certainties, which we naturally ascribe to common sense, as a means of questioning “logical” assumptions. One of his best-known pieces, “The Great Bear” (1992), replaces the names of stations on the map of the London Underground with those of famous philosophers, actors, comedians and saints. Patterson also engages with language’s visual quality. His name paintings consist of blank canvases onto which the artist has painted household names including Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor using an old typewriter font. This series evokes a multitude of images and narratives while referring to the creative crisis associated with the blank page or canvas.

Simon Patterson has recently presented solo exhibitions at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (2008), Haunch of Venison, London (2007), Haunch of Venison, Zurich (2006), Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2005) and Ikon Gallery Birmingham (2005). His work has also been shown in numerous museums and international exhibitions including “Mythologies” at Haunch of Venison London (2009), “The World May be Fantastic”, the Sydney Biennial (2002), “Projects 70” at MoMA, New York (1999), “Sensation, Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection” at Royal Academy, London, Hamburger Banhof Berlin, Germany and Brooklyn Museum, New York (1997-1999) and “Aperto” the 45th Biennale di Venezia, Venice (1993). Patterson was short-listed for the Turner Prize at Tate Britain, London (1996).

Simon Patterson is represented by Haunch of Venison, London, Berlin, Zurich and New York.
