BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1971 in Bellshill, Scotland, Michael Fullerton lives and works in Glasgow. Fullerton uses a variety of media including painting, sculpture and printmaking. His practice explores the relationship between aesthetics and knowledge, questioning the persuasiveness of evidence and the weight placed on belief. It encompasses radically different works, all of which stem from Fullerton’s specific investigations into various areas of inquiry: including scientific research, local politics and historical figures. Choice of medium is key to Fullerton’s practice. He understands all media, from paint pigment to analogue technologies, as mediating processes that transform the subjects they present. Fullerton is probably best-known for his Gainsborough-inspired portrait paintings of political figures such as “Paddy Joe Hill” (2007), a man wrongly convicted of an IRA bombing who was finally released nearly twenty years after the event.

Michael Fullerton will present a solo show at Chisenhale Gallery, London in September, 2010. Other recent solo exhibitions include “Black and White Are Colours” at Art Nova, Art Basel Miami Beach (2008), “Pleasure in Nonsense” at Carl Freedman Gallery, London (2007), “Get Over Yourself” at Greene Naftali Gallery, New York (2006), “ART NOW” at Tate Britain, London (2005) and “Suck on Science” at CCA, Glasgow, Scotland (2005). His work has been shown as part of “Unreliable Witness” at Tramway, Glasgow (2008), “Stay Forever and Ever and Ever” at South London Gallery, London (2007), the 3rd Tate Triennial at Tate Britain, London (2006), Prague Biennale 1 (2003) and the Gwangju Biennal, South Korea (2001).

Michael Fullerton is represented by Carl Freedman Gallery, London and Greene Naftali, New York.
