BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1969 in Herisau, Switzerland, Costa Vece lives and works in Berlin and Zurich. Vece’s spectacular and affective installations generate a strong sense of displacement, violence and trauma, evoking the lived experiences of refugees. His works immerse viewers in makeshift tents and cardboard constructions within which he projects news reports and extracts from films, including Pasolini's “The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964)” and Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi" (1982), looped in disturbing sequences that allude to catastrophic scenarios. As a means of addressing the precarious conditions of individuals marginalized by poverty, immigration and war, Vece has also created a series of flags sown out of patchwork rags and tattered clothing that suggest the scarce possessions of migrants who have no count within the legal framework of nation states.

Costa Vece has recently presented solo exhibitions at Galleria Franco Noero, Turin (2010), Binz39, Zurich (2009), Kunstmuseum Solothurn (2006), Georg Kargl BOX, Vienna (2006) and Galeria Filomena Soares, Lisbon (2006). His work has also been shown as part of “Heimspiel 2009” at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, St. Gallen (2009), “Shifting Identities” at Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich and CAC Vilnius, Vilnius (2008-2009), “The Crown Jewels” at Salon 94 Freeman, New York (2007), “Domestic Irony” at Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Bolzano (2007) and “Entre fronteras” at MARCO Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Vigo (2007).

Costa Vece is represented by Galerie Georg Kargl, Vienna and Galleria Franco Noero, Turin.
