BIOGRAPHY

Born in Rome in 1978, Chiara Fumai lives in Milan. Her work deals with some of the aspects of culture and society taking inspiration from media misrepresentation. Her works all originate through lecture-performances which then often continue to develop through other visual forms. Fumai loves to utilize anti-spectacular methods, the deconstruction of the rules which regulate the relationship of power between the public and the image, so creating works which, with irony and cynicism, have as an image the aims of their own research in order to re-examine the values of the literal reduction of the performance through so-called ‘documentation’ and transform, in other words, the object into subject, the final result in its context.

Despite the evident connection with Surrealist art, Fumai has so far tried to take inspiration from the contents and the actions carried out by subjects associated with counter-culture so creating original connections with performance traditions parallel to those of contemporary art, in this way eliminating the hierarchy which divides culture into top and bottom  like psychic activity, illusionism,  freak shows, self- hypnosis, oral tales. All these practices share the desire to explore thoroughly and in an unorthodox way, the invisible and its (mis)representation.

Her work has been shown in numerous museums and international exhibitions, including dOCUMENTA(13), Kassel (2012); CONTOUR 7, Biennial of Moving Image, Mechelen (2015); Quadriennale 16, Rome (2016); MACBA, Barcelona (2016), CA2M, Madrid (2015), MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome (2014), Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, Riga (2016), Mendes Wood DM, Sao Paulo (2016), SongEun ArtSpace, Seoul (2014).

She has received the IX Furla Art Award (2013); the XIV Premio New York (2016) and the Dena Foundation for Contemporary Art Fellowship (2016).
