BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1960 in London, United Kingdom, Richard Wright lives and works in Glasgow. Primarily using painting and drawing, Wright creates impermanent site-specific interventions and works on paper. His practice engages with temporality, the built environment, and painting as an active gesture. His large-scale wall drawings throw into relief architectural features otherwise meant to recede within exhibitions spaces, including ceilings, cornices, skylights and corners. Wright’s subtle decorative marks resemble the repetitive phrasings of a paired-down language. His laborious site-specific works take the form of intricate tattoo-like motives or minimal geometric patterns that shift viewers’ perception of a space by playing off of its architecture’s inherent trajectories.

Richard Wright has recently presented solo exhibitions at Gagosian Gallery, Rome, Italy (2015), The Modern Institute, Aird’s Lane, Glasgow, Scotland (2014), Nine Chains To The Moon (Chapter 1). BQ, Berlin, Germany (2014), Tate Britain, London, England (2013),Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2010), The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow (2010), Gagosian Gallery, London (2009) and BQ, Berlin (2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Votive” at CCA, Glasgow (2009), “Life on Mars”, the 55th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art (2008), “The subversive charm of the bourgeoisie” at Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2006), “No Manifesto” at La Galleria d’Arte Modema & Contemporanea (GAMEC), Bergamo (2005) and “Drawing Now: Eight Propositions” at MoMA, New York (2002). He was awarded the Turner Prize at Tate Britain, London in 2009.

Richard Wright is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow and Gagosian Gallery, and Gagosian Gallery, London, Rome, Athens, New York and Beverly Hills.
