BIOGRAPHY

The work of Israel Martínez (Guadalajara, Mexico 1979) reflects several social topics through sound, music and their relation to image. He has produced video installations, site-specific projects, actions, interventions and graphic works through the use of photography, typing, photocopying and other media. He has also made multichannel sound installations and composed music between electroacoustic and spatiality. Since 2000 he has taken part in events from several artistic territories, especially in America and Europe. In 2007 he accomplished a Distinction Award of Prix Ars Electronica. In 2012 he was resident at the DAAD’s Artists-in-Berlin Program, and at Vienna's MuseumsQuartier in 2014.

His music has been presented in several formats: multichannel concerts, performances and audiovisual sessions throughout England, Germany, Austria, France, Finland, Spain, Ireland, USA, Cuba, Colombia and Mexico. His aural work has been released on CD, vinyl and DVD, and distributed worldwide by labels such as Sub Rosa, Aagoo and Abolipop. He has also appeared in compilations such as Anthology of Noise & Electronic Music from Sub Rosa and a couple of Wire Tappers by The Wire magazine.

Since 2008 he has taught seminars and workshops focused on sound in contemporary art. He has also participated in some curatorial projects and writes texts intermittently. He's also co-founder of the multimedia platform Suplex and the music label Abolipop Records.

Individually he has exhibited at daadgalerie and Quiet Cue, Berlin; The Tin Tabernacle, London; MUAC, MUCA Roma, Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Fonoteca Nacional, Centro de Cultura Digital and Talcual Gallery, Mexico City; MURA, Laboratorio Sensorial, Lap_az and Artere-A, Guadalajara. He has participated in group exhibitions as the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art; at Haus für elektronische Künste Basel and Annex / Manesse Zurich, Switzerland; The White Building, London; The Wye, Neu West, Berlin; Ancienne école des vétérinaires, Brussels; quartier21 International MuseumsQuartier and Galerie IG Bildende Kunst, VBKÖ, Vienna; Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, San Francisco, Radiator Gallery, New York, USA; MUAC, Museo del Chopo, Ex Teresa Arte Actual and Galería Metropolitana, Mexico City; Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Ex-Convento del Carmen, Museo de la Ciudad, Guadalajara; MACO, Oaxaca; among other cities.
