There is a weight to Devon Costello’s work that comes not only from its subject, but also from the alchemy of the abstract and the physical in his pieces. His work requires a meditative examination as he mixes violence, consumerism and religion into beautiful abstraction. Costello produces beautiful surfaces without compromising the physical structure’s integrity and power. With a nod back to the art historical cannon, he is able to create a hybrid of art that fuses the past with an exciting present. By manipulating codified languages, objects are separated from their original and primary contexts and re-contextualized through an act of curation and appropriation.
