BIOGRAPHY

Paul Shambroom (b. 1956 Teaneck, New Jersey) is a photographer who explores American power and culture. His work is in the collections of many major American museums and has been widely exhibited internationally. His mid-career survey exhibition Paul Shambroom: Picturing Power will travel throughout the U.S. in 2008-2009. The accompanying illustrated catalog with essays is distributed by D.A.P. His photographs have been published in two previous monographs: "Face to Face with the Bomb: Nuclear Reality After the Cold War" (2003), and "Meetings" (2004). He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Creative Capital Foundation, among others. His most recent project “Security” documents official U.S. government preparedness and training in the aftermath of 9/11. Selected solo exhibitions include Paul Shambroom: Security at Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco (2008) and Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago (2007); Hereford Photography Festival in Hereford, England (2006); Security at Julie Saul Gallery in New York and Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis (2006); and Face to Face with the Bomb at the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas (2005). Selected group exhibitions include Picturing Modernity: The Photography Collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (2007); Loaded Landscapes at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago (2007); The BIG Picture at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina (2007); and John Q. Public and Citizen Jane at the University Art Gallery at San Diego State University in San Diego, California (2007).

He is represented by Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago, Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco, Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston and Rocket Gallery in London. Paul Shambroom lives and works in Minneapolis.
